I can tell you that its a crap game with time sink after time sink. Theres two different ways of upgrading gear and both are expensive and you have to do both. Putting manastones in sockets is especially bad since each insertion has a failure chance and failure means the stone and any others already in the item are destroyed.
Its a grind fest to a far greater extent than WoW. I'd advise not playing.

Hmm, this doesn't sound good, then.
But at the end of the day, if she wants to play it she will - and if she says "This is shit, I'm going back to WoW" she will, and there'll be no actual harm done. Thanks for the info though. She has interpreted the responses here as "They all suck." so will probably play what looks the prettiest. Which is what I'd do, except for the "playing in the first place" part.

So apparently they've been printing up new copies of Planescape: Torment. I lost my own copy a long time ago, so this is pretty nice.

The Ps:T news is great. Now I faintly regret getting it off eBay.
I finally got a registered copy of Aquaria. Sadly, the Mac version costs an extra $10, and I just realized that it may not have the PC version's 1.1.1 patch, which means that it will lack compatibility with a number of mods, which includes a semi-unofficial prequel that includes dialogue trees. Grr.
However, the game is still ridiculously awesome, so I'm not that upset. Maybe I'll give a friend $20 to buy themselves the PC version in a few months.

I just played Knytt ( http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?page=1003Knytt ) for about half an hour. Didn't have the sound on, since I'm working at the library and playing the game in between answering questions from the public. It was still pretty fun. Haven't played anything that felt much like that since An Untitled Story ( http://www.gamemakergames.com/?a=view&id=6278 ). And this wasn't Nintendo Hard.
City of Heroes just added a GOOD, free travel power at level 4. It's a $10 pay-for-play, but as a permanent buff for the account that's not bad at all. Considering that you can get the software for $20 anywhere, that's not an unreasonable price to get in the door.
Here's hoping the upcoming expansion works out.

I bought mine off amazon a few years ago. Even out of print they've been in circulation. What you really want, though, is the fan-made DVD with all of the fan-made bugfixes and finished unfinished material.A Hammer wrote:So apparently they've been printing up new copies of Planescape: Torment. Spellhold Studios is one place, yeah.
Sorcerer's place usually seems to have at the very least links to all the top notch addons for various old school RPG games.

That's libertarians for you - anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.
The new rachet and clanks are overall better, but they have play issues. The number of bugged areas and controls is much higher than on the first games.
On that point... EA just dissolved their largest QA department today. They've had no playtesting department for six months.
It's like... I dunno. I'm getting tired of 'why did they do that?' and 'What do I do next?' in games. Only the first two levels seem to be playtested anymore.

It's probably included, but I was referring to a specific disc image.deathdealingjawa wrote:is this the fan made content for Planescape: Torment you are talking about? It is the best fan made content I could find.
They did. I think this is it, but it's been a while.deathdealingjawa wrote: Now if only they came out with a playable version of Vampire Masquerade: Bloodline...

I'm playing through a no-upgrade mode of Henry Hatsworth.
I'm only on level 5-3 of the regular playthrough and I'm already getting my butt handed to me. The only reason I got as far as I did was due to my abuse of puzzle mode. I can't wait to try it again on Gentleman's Mode.

Your freedom to add and change rules in the middle of the game is in direct conflict with my ability to understand that rules system before I decided whether or not to join your game.
In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. You do not want me to be informed when I make the fundamental decisions of deciding whether to join your game or buying your rules system.

Champions Online released the character creator and tutorial level as a free download. I never play online, I just wanted the costume maker for M&M characters that HeroMachine can't do justice. It doesn't have all the features of HM, but what it does well, it does very well.
Then I made the mistake of trying out the tutorial, while I had some time to kill.
Seeing my oldest RPG character jumping into action to rescue civilians from alien invaders and receiving public acclaims onscreen, instead of just in my head like he has for almost two decades was ... wow.
The balance is wonky, they're losing players, the main quest is short -- I *know* all that, and I'm still gonna have to make saving throws every day to keep from getting the full version.

So all you fuckers can feel my pain, here are two links. The first is to the download page, the second is a link you need to click when you get "Error, contact billing services" the first time you run the demo.

We have reached a point where new games are not limited by computing power but by content-building power, which has pretty much stagnated for years now. Building a detailed world on the scope of Morrowind or Oblivion will take at least as much time as it did when those games where programmed - as resolution increases, so does world-building effort. Meanwhile we have next to no tools to make this task easier (a noticeable exception being Eskil Sternberg's Verse tools). Setting up quests and storylines is just as much effort as it used to be, but now we expect lip-synchronous movement and real, spoken text.TOZ wrote:I find it sad that I'm feeling more interested in playing things on my virtual consoles than anything on modern consoles lately.
In other words, the effort required to build a convicing world to play in is already staggering and until worlds are generated or at least detailed by automated tools I don't expect games to grow in content compared to what we already have. I hope they get on with it, because it is entirely possible. If one man can produce a MMORPG on his own, including an automated world-builder surely a development team can build a tool to flesh out an adventure game or failing that, a tool to generate random quests for a RPG or MMORPG. Game designers can then customize these pregenerated worlds. I doubt that we will be seeing handcrafted games any more complex or bigger than what we already have.

And that is why Spore, while not the most exciting game of recent times DID contain some of the most exciting game technology of recent times.
Unfortunately EA and other big publishers do not wish to back this technology because they LIKE limited content.
They think it makes people keep coming back and paying for more.
And all their favored modern experiments in game content have been in shrinking it, dividing it up and trying to sell it in small over priced parcels.
I've given up on buying PC games retail because of the current fad of releasing half a game with plans to sell you the other half later, which fall through due to failed technology and a lack of a market when the fans get pissed with the half game they paid for at full or higher price.

There's a big sale on this RPG called "Two Worlds" on Gogamer. Anyone ever play it? I figure it's nowhere near as good as, say, a Bethesda game, but it's only $3 for the sale. But is it worth $3 + shipping + the time?
edit: Ditto King's Bounty: Armored Princess on Steam for $10.
